Lt. Marie Segar is a specialist in fire and injury prevention at the Eagan Fire Department, an almost-all volunteer fire department. Nearly 100 firefighters strong, the fire department has only a handful paid fire fighters to cover daytime emergencies.
Lt. Segar came to the studio with her “sidekick” mannikinAndy, a demonstration dummy used to teach CPR methods that DO NOT include breathing into another person’s mouth, but focus on chest compressions. Marie also demonstrated the procedure of helping a victim of a cardiac episode, as well as the use of an AED (Automatic External Defibrilator) device. This device checks on a person’s heart activity and if appropriate, applies an electric shock that hopefully restarts the heart of the person again. Along with compressions applied, the chances for survival from a cardiac arrest are greatly enhanced.
Lt. Segar also discussed smoke detectors and some of the intricacies involved.
